National and Local Tour Permits Online

Starting January 5, 2009 volunteers and council staff will be able to apply for Local and National Tour Permits online through www.scouting.org.   'Tour Permits' is available from MyScouting to registered unit adult leaders.  It is necessary to have the member ID in the MyScouting account to obtain access.  (You may still use a paper permit and file it with the Service Center.)  National Tour Permits will be approved by the local council and sent to the region for action.  The status will remain as ‘Submitted’ until the region acts to approve or not approve.

Online Tour Permits has four easy steps.

  1. Creating a tour permit application
  2. Entering vehicle and training information
  3. Entering tour details
  4. Submitting a tour application

Volunteers can enter all the information for the tour, and BSA rules specific to tour permits will be applied.  Only the person who creates an application can edit and submit the application.  Other persons have read-only access to applications they did not create.

You will need detailed information about tour destination; Departure and return dates; Tour itinerary; Participation and leadership; Transportation plans including vehicle information, drivers’ license numbers, and insurance coverage; and training certificates for Youth Protection and any other course needed for the tour.

Once the permit has passed the rules, outlined in the Guide to Safe Scouting, the volunteer will be able to submit the permit application.  Each permit, once submitted, will have a unique tour ID number with tracking based on permit submittal and approval.  You will be able to search through existing permits and check their status.  Driver information for transportation and adult leadership qualifications will be stored in the system database making the entry of future tour permit applications quicker and easier.

There will be automatic notification at all appropriate steps in the process to the permit creator, the tour leader, and the assistant tour leader.  The unit chair and unit leader will also receive email notifications if they have MyScouting accounts.

A Power Point slide presentation is available on our website to view how the Tour Permit process works. Tour Permits Online will be available starting January 5, 2009.
